The American Heart Association strongly opposes House Bill 4057, by State Representative Larry Metz, removing the requirement for Middle School Physical Education. 

Currently 30% of Florida’s youth are overweight or obese.  As these students get older, their obesity problem just gets worse.

With the start of flu season here, it’s time to start thinking about staying healthy. Nothing can ruin the holidays like a bad case of the flu. Memorial Hospital Medical Director Dr. Gary Winfield says the best thing you can do is get a flu shot. “The flu shot is our best weapon against the flu,” Dr. Winfield said. “It can prevent you from getting the flu, or if you do get it, it can make your symptoms less severe.”

Tobacco Free Jacksonville Coalition and Tobacco Free Florida

Today marks the 36th Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The Tobacco Free Jacksonville Coalition with the Duval County Health Department, the Florida Department of Health and Tobacco Free Florida are celebrating this event by encouraging Floridians to commit to being tobacco-free for 24 hours on Thursday.

It’s beginning to look and feel a lot like the Holidays.  St. Vincent’s HealthCare will help usher in the season as the presenting sponsor of the St. Johns Town Center Holiday Spectacular, Nov. 19.

“This marks a special time of year. Not only is this a time to celebrate with friends and family but it’s a time to reflect on our many blessings and to give back to our community,” said Moody Chisholm, President of St. Vincent’s HealthCare. “We are honored to once again be a part of this family-friendly festive and joyous tradition.”

St. Vincent’s HealthCare will provide free cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure screenings from 12-9pm as well as free holiday photos. Shoppers will also have the opportunity to tour our mobile mammography unit, the only one in the city.

DCHD Recognizes November as National Diabetes Month

 

The Duval County Health Department (DCHD) recognizes November as National Diabetes Month, an opportunity to educate our community regarding the seriousness of diabetes and the complications that can occur. DCHD advises that everyone should use this time to become aware of the risk factors and complications of diabetes, along with effective preventive measures. It is the responsibility of the entire community to learn more about diabetes and the actions that can be taken to reduce the risk of occurrences and complications.
