Brooks Rehabilitation Offers Free Health Fair - “Keeping a Safe and Active Lifestyle in your Home”

Brooks Rehabilitation will join the nation in recognizing September 23rd, the first day of Fall, as Falls Prevention Awareness Day.   Each year, one in every three adults age 65 and older falls. Falls remain the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injury for older Americans. According to data from the State of Florida and the Florida Department of Health/Office of Injury Prevention, Floridians aged 65 and older account for more than 150,000 hospital treated injuries from falls with medical charges exceeding $2.5 billion dollars.

Many of these falls are preventable with the right initiatives in place.

On Friday, September 23rd, Brooks Rehabilitation will host a community-wide Health Fair featuring important topics to keep a safe and active lifestyle in the home. This FREE event will take place at the Brooks Family YMCA at 10423 Centurion Parkway N. from 10am to 2pm.  Brooks staff and volunteer sponsors will provide:

  • Balance assessments with recommendations
  • Vision/hearing screens
  • Blood pressure and medication screens
  • Orthotic & footwear demonstrations
  • Home modification demonstrations
  • Exercise demonstrations
  • and much more…

“We treat many patients within the hospital setting who were injured from a preventable fall.  Falls often lead to a loss of independence, reduced mobility, and even a fear of falling again. This fear may cause them to limit their activities, leading to further reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, which in turn increases their actual risk of falling,” said Shawn Witherspoon, an orthopedic physical therapist at Brooks Rehabilitation and organizer of the Health Fair.

“Brooks Rehabilitation is dedicated to providing a variety of rehabilitation services and education, empowering people to achieve their highest level of recovery and participation in life.  Events such as this Health Fair provide useful tips, education and assessments to help keep our patients and the community safe in their homes,” she said.
