High School Students: Time to Enter Manatee Art Contest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites high school art students across the state to participate in a contest to create a piece of manatee artwork that will be used on the 2011-2012 manatee decal.

Students in grades 9-12 in Florida should coordinate with their school’s art teacher to submit the artwork, because each school may submit no more than five entries. Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest. Contest details and forms are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee.

If you did not get what you wished for over the holidays, you may have a second chance -- with your blood donation!  The Blood Alliance invites you to start the New Year with a resolution to save lives and win!  “Resolutions for Life” blood drives will be held from January 10 - 15 at participating donor centers (Bloodmobiles and mobile drives are NOT included).  Donors who attempt to donate and give the gift of life at participating centers will be entered for a daily drawing to win Blu-ray players and a grand prize drawing for a 40-inch HDTV.  Everyone who registers to donate will also be eligible to win a 2010 Smart car from the Smart car Center Jacksonville, A Brumos Company.

Sam’s Club Brings Christmas Joy to Local Children’s Miracle Network Kids

The Christmas season is not a time that most people want to spend in the emergency room.  The kids who had to make that trip to Shand’s Pediatric Emergency Room on Monday, December 20th, got a little surprise from some local Sam’s Club employees.  Yesterday, fourteen of their employees made a special delivery of toys and some Christmas cheer.  For the past month, all three Jacksonville Sam’s Club locations collected $1400 worth of toys that were donated to Children’s Miracle  Network.

Jacksonville Country Day School concluded its food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank today, having collected a ton of food -- actually, an estimated 3,000 pounds -- and nearly $700 in cash donations.

Justice Coalition MakesPlea for Help from Public

The Justice Coalition is in a financial crisis and may be forced to close its doors after 15 years of helping innocent victims of violent crime.  The Justice Coalition staff and Board of Directors will be joined by innocent victims of violent crime, Sheriff John Rutherford, and community leaders as they make a public plea for help to save the non-profit organization that has helped so many victims throughout the years.  The Justice Coalition was itself a victim earlier this year, when their bookkeeper and office manager stole more than a hundred thousand dollars from the organization.  She pleaded guilty and is currently serving a three-year prison sentence.

Wild Adventures Donates Hundreds of Toys to Local Toy Drive

Celebrating the season of giving, Wild Adventures Theme Park (WA) announced the park has donated hundreds of its toys to the Toy for Tots Marine Reserve Program and is extending the park’s toy drive through December 23.  In response to feedback from the charity that donations were down this year, the park has donated more than 200 toys in addition to the approximately 300 toys already donated by guests.  WA is giving park guests a chance to spread holiday cheer during a Wild Adventures Christmas.  WA encourages park guests to donate a new toy, valued at $10 or more, December 18 through December 23, and receive a FREE general admission with purchase of a regular general admission.   Admission must be used on the same day of purchase and is valid for the second day FREE.
