New Holiday Show at the Alhambra!

If part of the magic of live theater is creating different worlds for audiences to explore, then audiences are in for a new Christmas thrill this year. For the cast and crew of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” the magic of theater also includes the magic of radio. The Alhambra Theatre & Dining announces its first-ever production of the beloved holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play adapted from Frank Capra's film and directed by Tod Booth.   The production will run December 1 -December 24, 2010.

The scene is Bedford Falls in 1948. The Alhambra transforms its intimate space into an actual 1940's radio studio to tell Capra's classic story of one man's affect on his community.  Just as in the old radio plays, the sound effects are created on stage. Movie pioneer Jack Foley perfected sound effects in the first talking pictures. A Foley station, where sound effects are recreated, is named after him.

“The sound effects are great,” said Alhambra owner Craig Smith. “Whether it is a car door closing, snow crunching, or a telephone ringing. With the use of the Foley station, the studio audience gets to see all the stuff as it succeeds and fails.  What is also interesting is what the actors and actresses are doing when they are not on microphone,” he continued. “They might be reading Life magazine, knitting or silently chatting between bits of dialogue.”

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” is adapted by from the screenplay by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Frank Capra and Jo Swerling. The play is inspired by the 1946 holiday film classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which starred James Stewart and Donna Reed.

"It's a Wonderful Life's message is stunningly relevant today, and its spirit could not be more needed right now.  This is a story which has brought people together time and time again for generations," says director Tod Booth. "It’s an honor to continue that tradition and do my part to remind people, as Clarence reminds George, 'no man is a failure who has friends.'"

As part of the holiday celebration, guests will be asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the Alhambra.  Throughout production, the Alhambra cast will then make deliveries to area hospitals and charities.

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” will open in grand style on December 1 with a continuation of what has become the traditional red carpet Gala Grand Opening Gala.  Complete with red carpets, skylights, and velvet ropes, VIPs, media and top-tiered season ticket holders, the Gala was brought back in early 2010 by the new ownership group. Executive Chef Matthew Medure will feature a holiday feast as the menu for this show.
