Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) tonight named Rosemarie Wilkening, part-time English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) paraprofessional at Chets Creek Elementary, as its 2011 School-Related Employee of the Year.

“Everyday Ms. Wilkening ensures that all our students and families, regardless of the language they speak, feel informed and included,” said Principal Susan Phillips. “She acts as the liaison and advocate for our Hispanic families by managing all of the communication and translations. She is truly an irreplaceable part of what makes our learning community a success.”

Wilkening has worked for DCPS for nine years, all of those dedicated to Chets Creek Elementary. She has consistently won awards for her commitment and devotion to the school and its students.

She currently leads the early intervention work with the kindergarten and first-grade ESOL students, and meets with small groups on a daily basis to work on improving their phonic skills and awareness. Wilkening also directs a Hispanic family outreach night in an effort to engage them as participants in their child’s education. Additionally, Wilkening has shown great interest in her professional development. In the past five years, she has completed several hours in ESOL training and Extensive Reading Mastery classes.

Wilkening will now go on to compete in the Florida School-Related Employee of the Year program, administered through the Florida Department of Education. She and other finalists will be recognized and the 2011 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year will be announced at the upcoming State Board of Education meeting this spring.

Mildred White, the school nurse at Biscayne Elementary, and Mona Bennett, the Exceptional Student Education paraprofessional at Fishweir Elementary, received honorable mentions for this year’s award.

Duval County Public Schools operates 172 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
